100% Kona Coffee
100% Kona coffee! Grown on the Big Island of Hawaii this is the real Hawaiian coffee. Many coffees sold as ‘Kona’ are actually blends of cheaper coffees with only 10% Kona.
We offer this local treasure in a seven ounce bag ground. Kona is on the west side of the Big Island of Hawaii and has a perfect climate for growing premium coffee. Kona coffee is grown on both large farms and small family farms. Makes a great gift or treat for your guests at home.
Coffee was introduced to the Big Island in the early 1800’s. Plants were brought to Kona from Brazil. The unique flavor of 100% Kona coffee comes from the volcanic soil in Hawaii. While it grows in other parts of Hawaii including O’ahu the Kona brand is supreme. Many believe the special taste is due to the growers themselves. Most farms are just a few acres and are family run. The factory farming methods used for other crops do not apply in Kona.
The trees produce as small, red fruit after flowering. This is sometimes called the coffee cherry. The coffee bean is the seed inside. After removal the seeds must be dried to perfection for the best taste. This can take several days before packaging or grinding.
There are also coffees called Kona blends. These typically contain as little as ten percent Kona coffee. While we do sell blends our packer clearly labels them as such. Some packer try to conceal the percentage so be careful when shopping in stores. The Kona Coffee Council has fought to protect the name and integrity of the coffee for their growers. 100% Kona coffee will bear their seal on or inside the bag.
