Oncidium orchids are grown here in Hawaii at farms on the Big Island. There are as many as 300 types of oncidium orchids. The most popular are yellow and purple. While very delicate in appearance this is actually a long lasting bloom. This is a tall flower stem with an usual and lovely shape and color. The yellow oncidium orchid is bright with a brownish face. The purple are a deep purple also with a brown color face. The purple oncidium often have a subtle scent of chocolate.
Oncidium orchids are not seen so frequently in flower displays as dendrobiums. For this reason they make a striking display for your home or special event. Display them by the dozen all in one color or as a mix of purple and yellow. The stems are also referred to as sprays.
For longest life trim a bit of the stem and change the water every few days.
You can order a bunch of one dozen oncidiums or add three or four to any existing flower assortment. If you are feeling creative build your own arrangement with your favorite Hawaiian flowers by the stem. Remember to add a bit of foliage for balance. Oncidium orchids add a lighter look to heavier, wider tropical flowers and protea.
If you would like to grow your own we do offer exotic orchids as part of our blooming orchids selections. Just add a note that you would like an oncidium, either purple of yellow for your blooming orchid. An oncidium orchid is fairly easy to grow. They do well in filtered light and intermediate temperatures with moist air. Over watering is harmful to the roots, as it is with most potted orchids. They do a bit better when left to grow in one spot.
